Fountain Volume

Imagine there's a circular fountain in your city park, and we want to estimate how much water it holds. Below is a photo of the fountain, with a person standing in the middle for scale.

A circular fountain with a person standing in the middle it for scale. The fountain is about as tall as the person's waist and twice their height in diameter.

1- Estimate Fountain Dimensions:

- Estimate its depth.

- Estimate Its diameter.

2- Calculate the Fountain’s Volume:

Plugging in our estimated values, we’ll find the approximate volume in cubic meters (and then liters).

This puzzle could then expand into questions like:

Water Cost: How much would it cost to fill the fountain at the local water rate?

Daily Water Evaporation: Given an average evaporation rate, how much water would be lost daily?

Maintenance: How often would the fountain need to be cleaned or refilled due to evaporation or water usage?

This approach helps students engage with geometry, measurement, and real-world applications of volume.
